Area of a Circle – by Kevin Hoang

So, a friend of ours from the great state of California, Kevin Hoang, sent this really neat Geogebra demonstration that a student made. It shows the classic slicing up of a circle into sectors and then rearranging them into a parallelogram like figure.

This is an amazing demo if you are exploring informal limit ideas in Common Core Geometry (yes I went there) to derive classic measurement formulas.

Thanks Kevin!

CC Alg I Regents Review #14 by Brett Widman

So, one of these days I’m going to put up a post with all of Brett’s Regents Reviews grouped together. This is the second one he’s given all of us in the last week!

There are numerous nice problems on this set, including a great system of inequalities word problem. It’s one of my favorites.

Consider using this as a nice take home assignment over spring break.

Thanks again Brett!

CC Algebra I Regents Review #12 – by Brett Widman

Brett Widman, from West Seneca CS, has given us another great review. You have to check out some of the graphs on this one. Really great work and nice questions.

With spring break coming up for many of us (yay!!!) this would be a great take home assignment. Thanks Brett!

CC Algebra I Reviews for Units 1 through 4 – by Christina Ruscio

Christina Ruscio from Hilton High School was kind enough to share review assignments she made for Units 1 through 4. She provided them in both Word and PDF format (she likes the fonts better via the pdf). These are all great resources to use as we get closer to review time and want lots of problems to pull from.

Thank you Christina for sharing. We hope you will share more of these as the year goes on 🙂

Trigonometry Resources by Jenn Sauer

Jenn Sauer has given us some great Trigonometry resources, especially for the current Algebra 2 and Trigonometry course in New York State. She contributed a wonderful packet of lessons and a great YouTube channel that links to videos on the lessons (hey, I’ve heard of that before).

Here’s the packet:

Regents Review #8 – by Brett Widman

Brett Widman, from West Seneca, sent us another great Regents Review. There are a lot of great questions on this one to help kids review domain, range, average rate of change, etcetera. Use it as a great Regents week review sheet.

Thanks again, Brett. Stay warm everyone.

How do I do those videos?

So, every once in a while I get an email asking how I make the videos. Instead of writing a long blog post about it, which would only confuse the situation, I have a video that explains everything I do. Check it out:

Online Calculator – Super Cool – from Kevin Hoang

Kevin Hoang, a recent contributor from the sunny state of California, recently emailed me with a link to an amazing, and free, online calculator that allows you to really do some neat things. Primarily, it allows you to place generalized functions in and then have the calculator change the parameters of the equation.

So, a simple example would be to have a linear function dependent on m and b graphed and then have a slider or even a simulation that shows what happens when you change m and/or b. They have a bunch of pre-made demos there as well, including one for trig that I cannot wait to show my precalculus students.

Desmos

Anyhow, here’s the link:

Thanks Kevin for this great resource!!!

Linear Modeling Project – Population Growth – by Steve Weissburg

Steve Weissburg from Ithaca High School has contributed a really great linear modeling problem for Algebra I. He has students model the populations of India and China over time. Kids collect the data, create a scatter plot, draw a line of best fit, come up with slopes, units, etcetera. Eventually, they predict the year in which India’s population overcomes China’s.

To put it mildly, this is a great project. If you want a performance based task to really have kids explore a very real linear modeling scenario, this is the ticket.

I’m creating a new Forum category called Algebra I Projects and Labs for these types of materials. Thank you Steve for contributing it! I hope we can get more from others as the curriculum develops.

Here are both the activity and the key:
