CC Alg I Unit #4 (Linear Functions) SMART Notebook Files – by Julie Merana-Spanarelli

Julie Merana-Spanarelli, from Central Islip High School, has been sending us SMART Notebook files to share. Here’s her contribution for Unit #4 on Linear Functions. Take a look if you use a SMART Board at school.

Thanks Julie!

CC Alg I Unit #10 (Statistics) SMART Notebook Files – by Julie Merana-Spanarelli

Julie Merana-Spanrelli, from Central Islip High School, sent in a great contribution today, especially given the timing. She’s put together a bunch of SMART Notebook files for Unit #10 on Statistics. So, if you use a SMART Board and are about to hit Unit #10, take a look at these before you create your own.

Thanks a ton Julie. We look forward to posting more.

Regents Review #15 (Wow!) – by Brett Widman

Spring has sprung, we are all back from break, and most of us are in the last quarter – that’s the fourth marking period!!!

Our friend, Brett Widman has given us another great contribution in the form of Regents Review #15. We will eventually put up a post with all of Brett’s contributions. This one has some great, great modeling problems on them – including a great inequality word problem and a great exponential depreciation problem.

Thanks again Brett!

Polynomial Factoring Flowchart – by Brett Widman

Our longtime contributor Brett Widman created a really nice flowchart to help students think about how to factor polynomials. He sent it along to us and we wanted to get it out there as teachers are finishing up this topic. We all know how hard factoring can be for students and this chart is a great graphic organizer that helps kids see the bigger picture while at the same time summarizes all the various methods.

Thanks Brett!

Two Parabola Activities – by Vivian Donnelly

Vivian Donnelly, from Guilderland up near Albany, has sent us two really neat activities having to do with quadratic functions and parabolas. These are great examples of applied math that allow students to really see how parabolas show up in the “real world.”

Thank you Vivian for generously sharing these with the larger community.

CC Alg I – Sum and Product of Roots – by Xia Xiaowu

Xia Xiaowu, a great math teacher from New York City, sent this awesome activity that has kids figure out what the sum and product of a quadratic’s roots are by using the Quadratic Formula.

Now, I know that many of you know that sum and product of roots is sort of “on the way out” in terms of content being assessed on both CC Algebra I and Algebra II, but this project is really neat and strengthens student understanding of quadratics and the quadratic formula. So, it is well worth a look.

Thanks so much Xia!!!!

Common Core Algebra I Regents Question Analysis – by the Nottingham Team

So, if you’ve been wondering, as I have, how the questions on the New York State Regents break down by standards, this is the Excel sheet for you.

This was put together by the awesome team at Nottingham High School, Christopher Desmond, Eric Scriarrino, Nina Gjoncari, and Christine Varley.

It is an Excel spreadsheet that lists all of the Common Core Algebra I standards, how many questions of previous Regents exams align to the standard, what weight, percent, etcetera.

They’ve even pasted the questions into the spreadsheet. It’s really an amazing analysis and I have to say I am so pleased they chose to share it with us so we could pass it on to the community here.

History of Common Core Assessment(1)

Thanks so much Christine, Nina, Erin and Chris.

Linear Versus Exponential – by the Nottingham Team

So, the team from Nottingham High School sent me this cool graphic organizer in order to compare and contrast linear and exponential models. This is a huge fluency issue within Common Core Algebra I and this resource really summarizes it nicely. Use it to help kids review at the end of the course!

Thanks to Christopher Desmond, Eric Scriarrino, Nina Gjoncari, and Christine Varley for sharing this!

Nottingham Gold – by Christopher Desmond, Erin Scriarrino, Nina Gjoncari, and Christine Varley

So, back in the fall of 1998, I spent 10 awesome weeks teaching at Nottingham High School in the great upstate New York City of Syracuse, probably best known for its college basketball team. But, I tell you, the students and teachers at the Ham provided me with some of the greatest memories of my early days in teaching.

Well, recently I’ve had the pleasure of communicating with some of their great teachers again. And, they just sent me some awesome resources, which I’m going to put in a few other posts so that people will have a better sense for what is there based on the title of the post.

I just wanted to give them a shout-out because of all of the great memories it brings back. Granted, at the time, I got to teach the Integrated Course III Regents Curriculum, which most of them likely don’t even know about.

Here are links to all of the other Forum articles with their recent contributions:
